According to the WHO, Cancer has officially gained the tag of the most dangerous killer in the world. It is one of the deadliest diseases spreading drastically in the 21st century.
The oldest Indian indigenous medicine system of plant drugs, Ayurveda is recognized for preventing or suppressing various tumors from ancient times. Cancer is described as inflammatory or non-inflammatory swelling according to ‘Charaka’ and ‘Sushruta Samhitas’ in Ayurveda. The main objective of Ayurvedic therapy is to find the root cause of an illness in which herbs facilitate total healing, reduce the side effects and cancer-associated complications. There are some plants, including Andrographis paniculata, Phyllanthus niruri, Basella rubra, Juniperus indica, Moringa oleifera, etc. that have scientific evidence of anticancer property. The herbs comprise several active principles that often operate synergistically producing therapeutic benefits and lowering the risks of adverse effects. Moreover, Ayurveda suggests an integrated approach in tumor management and treatment.
Therefore, it is important to spread the word and encourage the implementation of Ayurvedic therapies for combating cancer.
A research was conducted by AIIMS that demonstrates better recovery in cancer patients on the administration of coded ayurvedic drugs, in addition to radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
Moreover, Ayurveda recommends a number of herbs for preventing cancer like Amla, Ginger, Turmeric, Garlic, Holy Basil, Ashwagandha, and to name a few.
