When the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world, Remdesivir was found to be useful in fighting SARS-COV-2 and was given authorization for emergency use. While India is combating the second wave of COVID-19, Remdesivir is one of the drugs used for treating the SARS-CoV-2 virus in hospitalized adults.
Remdesivir was the first drug approved by the FDA for treating the SARS-CoV-2 virus. But it should be administered in a hospital or a health care setting that can provide a similar level of care to an inpatient hospital.
According to IDSA, Remdesivir does not provide an overall mortality benefit to the general group of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19. Still, it does reduce time to clinical improvement when given early during the course of illness and/or in patients with less severe disease.
